TRICARE Select Options
If you don't live in an area where a Prime option is offered you can choose to enroll in TRICARE Select or TRICARE Select Overseas.
TRICARE Select
- Visit any TRICARE-authorized providerAn authorized provider is any individual, institution/organization, or supplier that is licensed by a state, accredited by national organization, or meets other standards of the medical community, and is certified to provide benefits under TRICARE. There are two types of TRICARE-authorized providers: Network and Non-Network. DS, network or non-network.
- Care at military hospitals or clinics is available only if space is available.
- You don't need a referral for any type of care but some services may require pre-authorization.
The type of provider you see determines which option you are using and how much you'll pay out-of-pocket.
- When you see a non-network provider, you'll pay more and you may have to file your own claims.
- When you see a network provider, you'll pay less and the provider will file claims for you.

TRICARE Select Overseas
- Visit any overseas provider for care.
- Care at military hospitals or clinics is available only if space is available.
- You don't need a referral for any type of care but some services may require pre-authorization.
- You may have to pay the provider in full when you receive care and file a claim with TRICARE for reimbursement.

Note: If you have other health insuranceHealth insurance you have in addition to TRICARE, such as Medicare or an employer-sponsored health insurance. TRICARE supplements don’t qualify as "other health insurance." upon separation, TRICARE pays after your other health plan.
