Are Breast Cancer Screenings Covered?
TRICARE covers annual mammograms for women aged 40 and older, and for women aged 30 and older who have a 15% or greater lifetime risk of breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute has a tool to help estimate a woman's risk.
What are the Signs of Breast Cancer?
The most common sign of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. If you notice any new lump or change in your breast, see a health care professional. Other symptoms can include:
- Swelling in part of the breast
- Skin irritation or dimpling
- Pain in the breast or nipple
- Nipple retraction (turning inward)
- Redness or thickening of the skin
- Nipple discharge (other than breast milk)
Am I at Risk?
Risk factors for breast cancer include:
- Drinking alcohol
- Being overweight
- Having a family history of breast cancer
- Not being physically active
- Not having children
- Brest cancer survivor
When Should I Get Screened?
- Ages 40-49: Talk to your provider about when to start and how often to get a mammogram.
- Ages 50-74: Women with average risk should get a mammogram every two years.
