How to Enroll in a Health Plan

Enrolling in a health plan online is simple with the Beneficiary Web Enrollment system. With BWE, you can change your primary care manager, pay enrollment fees, and add other health insuranceHealth insurance you have in addition to TRICARE, such as Medicare or an employer-sponsored health insurance. TRICARE supplements don’t qualify as "other health insurance." if needed. Note that online enrollment is only possible for TRICARE Prime beneficiaries living in a Prime Service Area, and you need a Common Access Card, DFAS (MyPay) Account, or a DS Logon to access BWE. If you can't use BWE, find the correct electronic enrollment form. Always confirm your eligibility and update your information in DEERS before enrolling.

If you’re enrolling in TRS, make sure to remove the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program from your DEERS profile.

Understanding Qualifying Life Events

A QLE refers to changes like marriage, having a child, or retiring from active duty that might affect your TRICARE plan options. A QLE gives you a 90-day window to make changes to your enrollment. If one family member experiences a QLE, all family members can make changes. The first step in a QLE is to update DEERS with the new information. After your change is recorded, you can make enrollment changes.

What If You Don’t Act During a QLE?

If you're still eligible and want to keep your current plan, no action is needed. If you don't enroll in a plan and aren’t in one already, you'll only get care at military facilities if there's space. After retiring from active duty, you have 90 days to enroll in a plan. If you don't, you'll lose TRICARE coverage and will only receive care at military facilities if space allows. See what qualifies as a QLE.

Eligibility Verification

TRICARE covers Uniformed Service members, National Guard & Reserve members, their families, survivors, former spouses, Medal of Honor recipients, and others listed in DEERS. DEERS is a database of service members and their families who qualify for TRICARE. Keeping your DEERS information current is crucial for receiving TRICARE benefits and avoiding issues with claims.

Dual Eligibility

Beneficiaries under 65 who have Medicare Parts A and B have TRICARE For Life and can also choose TRICARE Prime. Active duty family members of any age have TFL and can choose TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select.
