Moving

Sometimes.

Relocation must be to a new country, city, region, or ZIP+4 code to be a QLE. You have 90 days from the date of your address change to change your TRICARE health plan.

Your TRICARE eligibility doesn’t change when you move. But it may change your health plan options. Keep these things in mind when you know you’re about to move:

  • Don’t disenroll from any plan before you move. You’re covered by your current plan on your way to your new location.
  • Update your address and other personal information in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System after you move.
    • You have 90 days from the date of your address change to change your TRICARE health plan.
    • If you make changes to your plan, the effective date will be the date your address change is effective in DEERS
  • Be sure to tell your regional contractor and all your providers if you have other health insurance in addition to TRICARE. By law, TRICARE pays after all OHI.

Are you PCSing?

Follow these tips to avoid interruptions to your healthcare.

  • Referrals: You can request new referrals for you new home station before you move. Here’s how:
    • Is your primary care manager at a military hospital or clinic? Call your PCM or send them a message in the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, or
    • Call your regional contractor.
  • Prescriptions: Make sure you have enough of your prescription to last while you move. Call or message your PCM to request prescription renewals or early refills.
  • Case management: Is a family member dealing with severe medical issues or enrolled in active case management?
    • If your family member moves from one military hospital or clinic to another, their care team will conduct a PCM-to-PCM warm handoff.
    • If your family member gets care in the civilian network, their TRICARE contractor will help with arranging care at their new location.
  • Global Nurse Advice Line: Call the Global Nurse Advice Line if you get sick while traveling.
    • Nurses will assess your symptoms and determine if you need care within 24 hours.
    • If you need care, the Global Nurse Advice Line will help you schedule an appointment at a military hospital or clinic or a virtual appointment with a DHA provider.
  • Enrollment: You must confirm enrollment in a TRICARE health plan when you arrive at your next duty station.
