Health Care Plans

Your child's health care plan depends on their sponsor's military status and where their school is. Update your child’s address in DEERS with his or her college address. If you don’t, your child may have problems with eligibility, coverage, or claims processing. When your child turns 23, or if they graduate before age 23, they may qualify to purchase TRICARE Young Adult up to age 26.  >>Learn More 

Health Care Plans in the U.S.

If your sponsor is  Healthcare plans
Active Duty
  • TRICARE Prime if school is in a Prime Service Area
  • US Family Health Plan if school is in a location where it’s available
  • TRICARE Select
  • Children can only use TRICARE Prime Remote if they still live at their parent’s home in a remote location
Retired
  • TRICARE Prime if school is in a Prime Service Area
  • US Family Health Plan if school is in a location where it’s available
  • TRICARE Select
 National Guard/Reserves  
  • If the sponsor is activatedCalled or ordered to active duty service for more than 30 days in a row.: Same as active duty sponsors (see above)
  • If not activated: Only covered if you've purchased TRICARE Reserve Select family coverage
  • If retired and under age 60: Only covered if you've purchased TRICARE Retired Reserve family coverage
  • If retired and age 60 or older: Same coverage as retired sponsors (see above)

Health Care Plans Overseas

If your sponsor is Healthcare plans
Active Duty
  • TRICARE Prime Overseas/TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas (if you’re command-sponsored and live with your sponsor)
  • TRICARE Select Overseas
Retired
  • TRICARE Select Overseas
National Guard/Reserves
  • If the sponsor is activated: Same as active duty sponsors (see above)
  • If not activated: Only covered if you've purchased TRICARE Reserve Select family coverage
  • If retired and under age 60: Only covered if you've purchased TRICARE Retired Reserve family coverage
  • If retired and age 60 or older: Same coverage as retired sponsors (see above)
