Prediabetes
Prediabetes is when blood insulin levels go up and create resistance but are not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes affects millions of adults and can go undiagnosed for years. Prediabetes is a warning sign for Type 2 diabetes.
Prediabetes Factors
- Genes: Family history of diabetes, 45 years of age and older, and ethnicity (African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic/Latino American).
- Diabetes during pregnancy
- Polycystic ovary syndrome

Prevention at Any Stage of Prediabetes
Prevention is key to taking care of your health. If you think you have prediabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes, take steps to lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes:
- Make healthy food choices. Be mindful of food portion sizes, replace refined sugars with whole food, and drink a lot of water.
- Move your body every day. This may look different for each person. A daily five-minute walk is a good starting point.
