Anorexia
Anorexia is a condition where people:
- Avoid food
- Severely restrict food
- Eat very small quantities of certain foods
- Have a distorted body image
- Have an extreme fear of gaining weight
There are Two Types of Anorexia: Restrictive and Binge-Purge
- Restrictive anorexia is a severe limitation of the amount and type of food consumed
- Binge-purge anorexia also limits food consumed and includes binge-eating and purging episodes
Symptoms include:
- Extremely restricted eating, intensive exercise, or excessive exercise, or a combination of these
- Extreme thinness (emaciation)
- Constantly trying to be thin
- Unwilling to maintain a normal or unhealthy weight
- Intense fear of gaining weight:
- Distorted body- or self-image
- Denying the seriousness of low body weight
Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder is a condition where people limit the amount or type of food they eat, but they don’t have a distorted body image. A child with avoidant restrictive food intake disorder doesn’t eat enough calories to grow and develop properly. An adult doesn’t eat enough calories to maintain basic body function.
Symptoms include:
- Dramatic restriction of types or amount of food eaten
- Lack of appetite or interest in food
- Dramatic weight loss
- Upset stomach, abdominal pain, or other gastrointestinal issues with no other known cause
- "Picky eating” that gets progressively worse
