When and how can I disenroll from my TRICARE plan?

US Family Health Plan

Active duty service members: you can’t disenroll from TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Prime Remote.

All others: you may disenroll at any time. If you disenroll, you may only enroll in another plan during the next TRICARE Open Season, or if you have a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). Once you disenroll, you are Direct CareIt's care you get at military hospitals and clinics. To learn more visit the Military Hospitals and Clinics page. Some individuals may get direct care only when space is available. Only, meaning you can only get care at military hospitals and clinics if space is available. You can only get your prescription drugs at a military pharmacy. 

For example, if you disenroll from TRICARE Prime in April 2024, you can’t re-enroll in TRICARE Prime or enroll in any other plan until the 2024 TRICARE Open Season or until you have a QLE. Your coverage starts on January 1, 2025. This means that from April 2024 to December 31, 2024, you don’t have TRICARE coverage. 

Note: If you’re a TRICARE Prime enrollee who lives in a USFHP area, you may change your TRICARE Prime primary care manager (PCM) to a USFHP PCM at any time. You don’t have to wait for the TRICARE Open Season or a QLE.  You can also change from a USFHP to a TRICARE Prime PCM at any time.
TRICARE Select

TRICARE Select Overseas

You may disenroll at any time. If you disenroll, you may only enroll in another plan during the next TRICARE Open Season, or if you have a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). Once you disenroll, you are Direct Care Only, meaning you can only get care at military hospitals and clinics if space is available. You can only get your prescription drugs at a military pharmacy. 

For example, if you disenroll from TRICARE Select in April 2024, you can’t re-enroll in TRICARE Select or enroll in any other plan until the 2024 TRICARE Open Season or until you have a QLE. Your coverage starts on January 1, 2025. This means that from April 2024 to December 31, 2024, you don’t have TRICARE coverage.
TRICARE Reserve Select

You may disenroll at any time. If you disenroll, you can't re-enroll for 12 months.

TRICARE Retired Reserve  You may disenroll at any time. If you disenroll, you can't re-enroll for 12 months.

TRICARE Young Adult 

You may disenroll at any time. If you disenroll, you can’t re-enroll for 12 months. 

If you’re a TRICARE Young Adult enrollee, you may switch from the TRICARE Young Adult-Prime Option to the TRICARE Young Adult-Select Option (or vice versa) at any time.
