Tooth decay is the most common chronic health problem affecting children in the U.S. today. More than half of children between ages 6 and 8 have had at least one cavity in their baby teeth, and more than half of teens between 12 and 19 have had cavities in their adult teeth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Who can enroll in the TRICARE Dental Program?
The following individuals may enroll:
- Active duty family members
- National Guard and Reserve family members
- National Guard and Reserve members who aren’t on active duty or covered by the Transitional Assistance Management Program

Yes. There are some exceptions:
- You can’t enroll in a family plan if you’re a National Guard or Reserve sponsor. You may only enroll in a separate single plan.
- You don’t have to enroll your children under age 1. The TDP contractor automatically enrolls children at age 1.
- You don’t have to enroll your family members who live in different locations (for example, away at college).

Enrollment in the TRICARE Dental Program is easy and open year-round!
Enrolling in the TRICARE Dental Program is quick and easy. You can enroll at any time of the year if your sponsor has at least 12 months remaining on their service commitment.
Your coverage start date depends on when your enrollment and first month’s premium are received:
- By the 20th of the month: Coverage begins the first day of the next month.
- After the 20th of the month: Coverage begins the first day of the second month.
If you get any dental care before your start date, you’ll have to pay for the full cost of your care.
