Frenectomy (tongue-tie surgery)

A frenectomy is a surgery to correct lip ties or tongue ties. It’s also known as a frenotomy. TRICARE may cover this procedure if it’s medically necessary . For example, TRICARE may cover the surgery if it will improve a child’s:

• Breathing
• Eating 
• Speech development

TRICARE won’t cover the surgery if it’s for cosmetic or dental purposes. 

The child must get the procedure by Dec. 31 the year following their birth. (TRICARE may make an exception when a child’s growth affects the timeline of surgery.) 

You may need a referral or pre-authorization . Check with your regional contractor for referral and pre-authorization requirements.
