Who Is Eligible for TRICARE Coverage? (East Region)
TRICARE health plans offer coverage to uniformed service members, National Guard and Reserve members, their families, survivors, former spouses, Medal of Honor recipients, and others listed in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System.
There are two types of beneficiaries:
- Sponsors: Active duty, retired and National Guard and Reserve members
- Family members: Spouses and children who are registered in DEERS
The sponsor’s uniformed service determines who is eligible for TRICARE and reports it in DEERS.

- Active duty service members and their family members
ADSMs must be enrolled in TRICARE Prime. Active duty family members can enroll in a TRICARE Prime plan with their sponsor. Alternatively, they may qualify to use one of the following plans: TRICARE Select, Uniformed Services Family Health Plan (Prime-like plan in specific U.S. locations), TRICARE For Life (with Medicare Part A and Part B coverage) or TRICARE Young Adult (dependent adult children only).
