Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome Treatment
TRICARE may cover treatment of temporomandibular joint syndrome. This is also known as TMJ syndrome and acute myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome.
Your treatment must address a medical problem and not a dental problem. It’s a medical problem only when it involves immediate relief of pain.
Emergency treatment may include:
- Initial X-rays
- Construction of an occlusal splint, if needed to relieve pain
- Up to four office visits
You may get more than four visits within a six-month period. But your provider must document this appropriately.
For TMJ syndrome, TRICARE doesn’t cover:
- Occlusal equilibration
- Restorative occlusal rehabilitation
