Nutritionist or Dietitian Services

TRICARE covers a limited set of services from a nutritionist or registered dietitian. This nutritionist or registered dietitian must:

  • Have a license from the state in which you get the care

  • Be under the supervision of a physician for the treatment

For example, TRICARE covers services:

  • You get during an inpatient hospital stay

  • You get during a doctor’s office visit

  • You get through diabetes self-management training

  • For the treatment of certain conditions. These include inborn errors of metabolism, medical conditions of malabsorption, pathologies of the alimentary tract or the gastrointestinal tract, and a neurological or physiological condition.

  • For medical nutritional therapy or counseling

  • For other authorized covered services that are medically necessaryTo be medically necessary means it is appropriate, reasonable, and adequate for your condition.. These include the treatment of anorexia nervosa or obesity.

In addition, many military hospitals and clinics have nutrition clinics. You can make an appointment with a registered dietitian or attend nutrition classes at these clinics.
