Breastfeeding Counseling

TRICARE covers:

• Breastfeeding counseling provided during inpatient maternity stays, outpatient follow-up visits, and well-child visits and
• Up to six individual outpatient breastfeeding counseling sessions per birth event

Breastfeeding counseling is guidance and support from a trained medical professional to help mothers successfully breastfeed their babies.

Beneficiaries who:

• Are pregnant,
• Have given birth, or
• Legally adopt an infant and plan to breastfeed

For outpatient breastfeeding counseling sessions:

• The provider must be an authorized doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, or registered nurse.
• Services can be provided in an outpatient hospital setting, a clinic, or a TRICARE-authorized provider’s office or through virtual health.

There’s no cost for outpatient breastfeeding counseling when it’s billed as a preventive service and it’s the only service provided during the session.  

TRICARE doesn’t cover counseling from individuals who aren’t TRICARE-authorized medical providers. (However, you may qualify to get breastfeeding support counseling from certain non-medical providers through the TRICARE Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration.)

Breast pumps and supplies
