Bone Marrow Transplants
TRICARE covers bone marrow transplants to treat certain conditions. Autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplants are covered when they are safe and proven to be effective treatments.
- Autologous Bone Marrow Transplants—Patient is donor and recipient of bone marrow stem cells. This transplant is usually performed in combination with high-dose chemotherapy to treat cancer.
- Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant—Patient receives bone marrow stem cells from a compatible donor. The donor may or may not be a relative. This transplant is usually performed to treat bone marrow diseases.
TRICARE doesn't cover:
- Bone marrow transplants for patients who have another condition that could affect the success of the transplant
- Transplant services that are part of a grant, research program or are an unproven procedure
- Drugs that aren't approved by the Food and Drug Administration
- Non-medical expenses (hotel, meals or transportation) before or after transplant for the beneficiary or their family members
- Donor transportation
