Does TRICARE cover braces?

No but the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) does. You must enroll and pay a monthly premium for coverage. TDP covers braces for:

  • National Guard and Reserve sponsors under age 23 (check with your unit commander before getting braces. Or else, you may have to leave active duty, or pay for the removal of your braces if it makes you ineligible for certain assignments.)
  • Spouses of active duty or National Guard and Reserve sponsors, who are under age 23
  • Children under age 21, or under age 23 if enrolled as a full-time student

If you live overseas, you must have Non-Availability and Referral Form (NARF) to get braces.
To learn more, download the TDP Handbook.

If you’re an active duty service member, you need an authorization from your command. To learn more, download the Active Duty Dental Program Handbook

If you enrolled in a dental plan under the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), call your FEDVIP dental plan to see if it covers braces.
