How does TRICARE work if I have other health insurance?

By law, TRICARE processes your claims last after all other coverage, except for:

  • Medicaid,
  • TRICARE supplements,
  • State Victims of Crime Compensation Programs, and
  • Other Federal Government Programs identified by the Director, Defense Health Agency.

This means your other health insuranceHealth insurance you have in addition to TRICARE, such as Medicare or an employer-sponsored health insurance. TRICARE supplements don’t qualify as "other health insurance." processes your claim first. Afterwards, you or your doctor must file a claim with TRICARE. After TRICARE processes your claim, you may still have leftover out-of-pocket costs. To learn more, visit Using Other Health Insurance page.

Note: You must follow the rules of your other health insurance. If your other health insurance doesn’t pay on your claim because you didn’t follow their rules, TRICARE may not pay on your claim.
