Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

TRICARE may cover the following forms of diagnostic radiology when medically necessaryTo be medically necessary means it is appropriate, reasonable, and adequate for your condition., appropriate and the standard for care for diagnosis:

  • MRI with or without contrast media
  • Open MRI with or without contrast media
  • Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA)
  • Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance
  • Breast MRI to screen for breast cancer for high risk beneficiaries
    • Age 30 and older if enrolled in TRICARE Prime (includes all Prime options)
    • Age 35 and older for all others

TRICARE doesn't cover MRI to:

  • Confirm implant rupture in symptomatic patients
  • Evaluate breasts before biopsy to differentiate benign from malignant breast disease or to differentiate cysts from solid lesions
