Did you know that the average life expectancy for men is almost six years less than it is for women? In 2021, the average life expectancy at birth for men in the U.S. was 73.5 years.

What are some of the top concerns specific to men’s health? These include prostate and testicular cancer. Men are also at high risk for lung cancer and heart disease, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Diabetes and depression are significant health concerns too.

If you’re a man, you can prioritize and improve your health by using your TRICARE preventive care benefits. You can also take advantage of Humana Military’s support programs. Here are health resources to know.

Diabetes

TRICARE covers many services for people with diabetes. If you have diabetes, staying on top of annual vision screenings and regular A1C tests can help limit problems. These routine procedures can help you maintain better health. Humana Military’s Disease Management Program offers virtual events to help you on your health journey. Examples of recent events include “Diabetes 101” and “Eat Right to Fight Diabetes.” These events are free of charge.

Heart Disease

According to the National Institutes of Health, 8.3% of men ages 20 or older have heart disease. “Heart disease” refers to several types of conditions. TRICARE covers many preventive services related to heart health. You can also check out Humana Military’s Disease Management Program, newsletter, and online support events for circulatory conditions. These conditions include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, and hypertension.

Mental Health and Depression

Your mental health is as valuable as your physical health. TRICARE covers a variety of mental health services.

Humana Military has a network of providers who offer mental health support services. This network includes options for in-person and virtual appointments. Read more about telemedicine services.

Humana Military’s Depression and Anxiety Disease Management Program offers one-on-one support. You’ll be matched with a medically trained staff person. Together, you’ll make health goals and create steps to meet them. Program staff offer helpful information to meet your individual needs.

Check the schedule for the next webinar or online community group meeting. Webinars provide information on specific topics related to depression and anxiety. A trained expert leads each event. There’s always time for questions. Online community groups are a space for people with the same diagnosis to chat about a specific topic. A trained facilitator hosts each session.

Humana Military also has a behavioral health newsletter. This newsletter covers current topics and helpful tips to care for your mental health.

Cancer

Cancer screenings can look for some types of cancer before symptoms appear. This can help find cancer at an early stage. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. Men are particularly at risk for lung, prostate, and testicular cancers.

  • Lung cancer: TRICARE covers annual lung cancer screenings if you meet certain criteria. Learn more about Humana Military’s respiratory disease management program for beneficiaries with asthma and COPD.
  • Prostate: This cancer forms in the prostate gland and only occurs in males. It’s the most common type of cancer for men. It’s also the second leading cause of cancer death. TRICARE covers prostate cancer screenings if you meet certain guidelines.
  • Testicular: This cancer forms in tissues of one or both testicles. It’s most common in young and middle-aged men. TRICARE covers testicular cancer exams annually for males ages 13 to 39 years who have a history of certain medical issues.
