Preventive health care starts at birth. Regular checkups help you and your child’s pediatrician track your child’s health and development. They also help prevent diseases and detect medical conditions early when conditions may be most treatable.

Scheduled well-child visits

The National Institutes of Health recommends children get regular well-child visits before age 2. Our goal is that children will have six well-child visits before their first 15 months of life. During these visits, your child’s doctor will check their height, weight, blood pressure, vision, and hearing. They’ll also give any necessary vaccines. They may conduct screenings for conditions such as autism, developmental delays, and hearing and vision problems. Use these visits as an opportunity to discuss concerns and successes with your child’s pediatrician.

Doctor visits aren’t just for when your child is sick.

The many benefits of keeping up with recommended well-child visits include:

  • Preventing illness through immunizations
  • Tracking measurements and other developmental milestones
  • Learning best practices for helping your child

TRICARE covers well-child care from birth through age 5. This includes services like newborn carevaccinations, and more.

Make prevention a priority. Talk with your doctor about when your child is due for a checkup. Remember as children grow and mature, their needs will change.
