Auditory Osseointegrated Implant Devices

  • An AOI is a prosthetic device implanted in the skull.
  • Over a period of time, living tissue integrates with titanium in the implant.
  • One example includes the Bone Anchored Hearing Aid system.

TRICARE covers AOI devices when:

  • Needed for significant conditions resulting from trauma, congenital anomalies, or disease
  • Used as indicated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration 

TRICARE also covers related services and supplies, such as:

  • Hearing exams
  • Accessories
  • Training to use the device
  • Repairs or replacements

TRICARE doesn’t cover:

  • A non-osseointegrated, non-implantable hearing device (for example, the BAHA Softband)
  • Semi-implantable hearing aids or systems that use magnetic coupling
