Learn To Cope

The best way to stay quit is to not use tobacco. Don’t think you can steal a drag off your friend’s cigarette once in a while and still be tobacco free. Giving in to nicotine cravings puts you at risk for starting to smoke or chew tobacco regularly again.

But if you do fall off the wagon once, twice, or a half dozen times, don’t give up. One slip–up is not failure. In fact, setbacks are a normal part of the process of quitting. And the more you try, the greater your chances of quitting smoking or chewing tobacco for good.

If you’ve forgotten what inspired you to quit smoking or chewing tobacco, look at your quit plan. Have any of your reasons changed? You may discover even more reasons after you’ve been quit for a few weeks, such as:

  • You can now take a deep breath without hacking and coughing.
  • You can do your physical training or just shoot hoops without losing your breath.
  • Your hands and feet aren’t freezing cold anymore.
  • You can smell and taste your food better than before.

And you might be starting to feel proud of yourself for doing another thing that’s good for you, for your loved ones, and for your country.

Don’t give up if you have a lapse in willpower. A setback doesn’t mean you’re a failure. It just means you’re human. You can still quit smoking or chewing tobacco…and stay quit for life.
