Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome Treatment

TRICARE may cover treatment of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Syndrome.  This is also known as acute myofacial pain dysfunction syndrome.

Your treatment must address a medical problem and not a dental problem. It is a medical problem only when it involves immediate relief of pain.

Emergency treatment may include:

  • Initial x-rays
  • Up to four office visits
  • Construction of an occlusal splint, if needed to relieve pain

You may get more than four visits within a six month period.  But your provider must document this appropriately.

For this syndrome, TRICARE doesn't cover:

  • Occlusal equilibration
  • Restorative occlusal rehabilitation
