What About Care After Jan. 1, 2025?

How much you pay and who files claims are based on the type of provider you see.

I’m a TRICARE Prime enrollee.

I already have a referral/authorization that lasts past Jan. 1, 2025.

  • Starting Jan. 1, 2025, if the provider on your referral is:
    • A TRICARE network provider, you can keep seeing your provider until the referral ends or June 30, 2025, whichever comes first. TRICARE Prime copayments apply.
    • No longer a TRICARE network provider, you can keep seeing your provider and pay TRICARE Prime copayments. Starting April 1, 2025, if the provider is still a non-network provider, and is not named on the authorization, you'll have to pay point-of-service fees. Make sure to get a new referral or pre-authorization before the old one expires, or by July 1, 2025.

My care doesn’t need a referral/authorization (for example, mental health care).

  • Starting Jan. 1, 2025, if your provider is:
    • A TRICARE network provider, you can keep seeing your provider. TRICARE Prime copayments apply.
    • No longer a TRICARE network provider, you can keep seeing your provider and pay TRICARE Prime copayments. Starting April 1, 2025, if the provider is still a non-network provider, you'll have to pay point-of-service fees. You may also have to pay up front and file a claim when seeing a nonparticipating, non-network provider.

I’m a TRICARE Select enrollee.

I already have a pre-authorization that lasts past Jan. 1, 2025.

  • Starting Jan. 1, 2025, if the provider on your pre-authorization is:
    • A TRICARE network provider, you can keep seeing your provider until the preauthorization ends or June 30, 2025, whichever comes first.
    • No longer a TRICARE network provider, you can keep seeing your provider but you’ll pay a non-network copaymentA fixed dollar amount you may pay for a covered health care service or drug. or cost-shareA percentage of the total cost of a covered health care service that you pay.. To avoid higher costs, ask for a new pre-authorization to a TRICARE network provider.

My care doesn’t need a pre-authorization.

  • Starting Jan. 1, 2025, make sure to see a TRICARE network provider. If you don’t, you’ll pay more out-of-pocket. You may also have to pay up front and file a claim when seeing a nonparticipating, non-network provider.

What about TRICARE Autism Care Demonstration Participants?

All services under the Autism Care Demonstration must follow the rules of the demonstration. When a pre-authorization expires, a new one must be in place before getting care again. Learn more on the TRICARE Autism Care Demonstration page.
