TRICARE covers services that are medically necessaryTo be medically necessary means it is appropriate, reasonable, and adequate for your condition. and considered proven. Starting January 1, 2018, we will cover more services, including:

  • Coverage of medically necessary foods and vitamins
  • Eligibility of Certain Enrollees for Participation in Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) beginning in 2019
  • Extended coverage for certain members of the National Guard and Reserve dependents during certain disaster response duty

Coverage of Medically Necessary Foods and Vitamins

Currently, TRICARE covers formulas and vitamins for enrollees with metabolic disorders, such as:  

  • Inborn errors of metabolism
  • Medical conditions of malabsorption
  • Pathologies of the alimentary or gastrointestinal tract
  • Neurological or physiological conditions

Starting January 1, 2018, we will begin to cover low protein modified food and amino acid preparation products for dietary management of individuals with limited or impaired capacity. Medical supervision and a prescription are required, among other specific criteria.

Changes in Dental and Vision Coverage

The current TRICARE Retiree Dental Program will end Dec. 31, 2018. We are replacing it with the Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Dental and Vision Program (FEDVIP). Vision plans will also be available to eligible TRICARE beneficiaries through FEDVIP.

If you are eligible, you can start enrolling in FEDVIP in November 2018.  Coverage will start Jan. 1, 2019.  We will provide more information closer to enrollment.

Extended Coverage for National Guard and Family

We are extending TRICARE coverage for certain National Guard and Reserve members and their families when the member’s military duty is interrupted to perform state disaster response duty.
