Patient Safety

The Department of Defense (DoD) Patient Safety Program (PSP) was mandated by the Floyd D. Spence National Defense Authorization Act of 2001 in an effort to ensure the safe delivery of health care to 9.6 million TRICARE beneficiaries across the Military Health System (MHS).

  • The mission of the PSP is to promote a culture of safety to eliminate preventable patient harm by engaging, educating and equipping patient care teams to institutionalize evidence-based safe practices.
  • The DoD PSP guiding principles include:
    • Encouraging an evidence-based systems approach to create a safer patient environment
    • Engaging MHS leaders on the importance of patient safety and the establishment of a supportive organizational culture
    • Fostering trust, transparency, teamwork and communication
  • Our comprehensive program provides products, services, educational opportunities and training resources to health care leadership, health care professionals and beneficiaries.

The DoD PSP is composed of three integrated components:

  1. Patient Safety Solutions Center
  2. Patient Safety Analysis Center
  3. Patient Safety & Quality Academic Collaborative

“On October 1, 2013, the Department of Defense established the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to manage the activities of the Military Health System. These activities include those previously managed by TRICARE Management Activity (TMA), which was disestablished on the same date. During the next several months, all TMA websites will change to reflect the new DHA. We appreciate your patience during this transition."
