Quitting tobacco is hard, but with the right support it can happen. On Nov. 15, the American Cancer Society hosts its Great American Smokeout, a day for smokers to accept the challenge to quit smoking for 24 hours. TRICARE is ready to help beneficiaries kick tobacco.
Cigarette smoking causes one of every five deaths in America, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Tobacco use is also the number one cause of preventable disease-related illness and death in the United States. With these facts, it’s easy to see why someone would want to quit. However, quitting tobacco can be a struggle, that’s why TRICARE has resources available for those ready to quit.
Quit Tobacco, Make Everyone Proud is a tobacco cessation campaign to help military personnel, family members and retirees kick the habit. The campaign’s award winning website www.ucanquit2.org offers online resources such as live support via a 24/7 online chat messenger, cigarette smoke facts, a help locator and a personalized quit plan outline to help smokers in their efforts to quit.
TRICARE offers toll-free smoking cessation support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Beneficiaries who want to quit or who’ve relapsed can call to talk with a trained smoking cessation coach who will assess their cessation process and recommend appropriate treatment and the resources to quit smoking or remain smoke free.
It’s time to lose the excuse and take the tobacco free challenge. Anyone interested in becoming tobacco free can take advantage of the resources available or speak with their primary care provider to develop a quit plan for success. For more information on quitting tobacco go to www.ucanquit2.org.
