Commit to Quit Tobacco for National Kick Butts Day
Say no to tobacco this Wednesday, March 19, 2014 for Kick Butts Day. Kick Butts day is a national day of activism organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. During Kick Butts Day, TRICARE beneficiaries can pledge to quit smoking by joining others in an effort to raise awareness about the seriousness of tobacco use.
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking harms nearly every organ of the body and leads to many diseases, including heart disease, lung disease, and cancer. Making the commitment to quit smoking will automatically lower the risk of contracting smoking-related diseases and promote a longer life span. On average, non-smokers live 13 to 14 years longer than smokers.
TRICARE understands that quitting is hard and provides several tobacco cessation programs to assist beneficiaries in their quest to quit. Benefits are available to all beneficiaries who are not eligible for Medicare, and a diagnosis for a smoking-related illness is not required to use TRICARE smoking cessation benefits. TRICARE beneficiaries who are ready to take a step towards improving their health can visit the Quit Tobacco - Make Everyone Proud campaign website, www.ucanquit2.org, for tools to stay tobacco free.
