Is It Covered?

Search the A-Z list for a list of covered services. Your coverage and out-of-pocket costs may vary based on who you are and your health plan option.

Custodial Care

Custodial care is taking care of someone's daily needs, such as eating, dressing, or providing a place to sleep, as opposed to taking care of someone's medical needs.

TRICARE does not cover custodial care in an institution or at home.

Some aspects of the care may be covered, such as limited specific skilled nursing services (one hour per day), prescription medicines and up to 12 physician visits per calendar year. Medically-necessary care for inpatient care in an acute-care hospital is covered, even if the person's medical care is considered "custodial."

Disclaimer:

This A-Z list of topics is not all inclusive. TRICARE covers most inpatient and outpatient care that is medically necessary and considered proven. However, there are special rules or limits on certain types of care, while other types of care are not covered at all.
